One of the most fascinating and sacred buildings in the heart of Paramaribo, Suriname is South America's largest wooden structure - the Cathedral Basilica Saint Peter and Paul. It is the seat of the Catholic Diocese and holds centuries of history. Aside from being a unique work of architecture, the Cathedral is also Suriname's most historic monument.
The Challenge
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, the largest wooden structure in South America, is a national monument in Paramaribo, Suriname. Despite its rich history and restoration in 2014, the Cathedral lacked visibility and presence at night. The goal was to illuminate its façade in a way that respected its heritage while showcasing its architectural beauty. The lighting had to enhance, not overpower, the sacred and historical character of the building.
Our Solution
Project Lighting Solutions developed a tailored lighting design to accentuate the Cathedral’s unique wooden architecture. After a thorough site analysis, fixtures were strategically placed to highlight key structural elements. Warm lighting tones were used to preserve the monument’s authentic feel. The result is a radiant, respectful nighttime presence that celebrates the Cathedral’s history and spiritual significance.
