One of the most fascinating and sacred buildings in the heart of Paramaribo, Suriname is South America's largest wooden structure - the Cathedral Basilica Saint Peter and Paul. It is the seat of the Catholic Diocese and holds centuries of history. Aside from being a unique work of architecture, the Cathedral is also Suriname's most historic monument.
Throughout the early 1800s, numbers started to grow in the Catholic community and a new building was needed to facilitate the community. Construction of the Cathedral started in 1885 and was completed in 1901. Its incredible interior is made of unpainted Surinamese cedarwood while its exterior was made from bruinhart wood. As decades passed by, the Cathedral became fragile, but the Cathedral gained back its strength after a restoration in 2014. Today, the Cathedral stands stronger and brighter than before.
Project Lighting Solutions was contracted to illuminate the façade of this beautiful monument. As the Project Lighting Solutions team looked to the Cathedral's façade, they envisioned a Cathedral which shone its light to the heavens and showcased its unique architecture. By first conducting a detailed lighting design, Project Lighting Solutions ensured that each light was strategically placed to showcase the structural beauty, giving this monument the attention it deserves during the day and at night.
